Port Orange in one minute

A river town that grew west.

Port Orange began on the Halifax River. In 1867 a settlement first called Orange Port moved here from Mosquito Inlet, now Ponce Inlet, and changed its name to Port Orange that April. For decades it was a town of citrus, lumber, boat building, oystering, and ranching. Today it covers almost 27 square miles, from the river west past I-95, with gated communities and new shopping along the way.

People here stay put. Nearly nine in ten residents lived in the same house a year earlier, and the average household is just over two people. So many Port Orange moves are long-time owners moving within the area, downsizing, or making room for family, often with a garage, a lanai, and a few decades of belongings.

Port Orange has an exclusive franchise with Waste Pro for garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulk items. Your days are in the city’s solid waste brochure.

Garbage days

Twice a week

Cans

32 gallons

Cans should have handles and lids, hold no more than 32 gallons, and weigh no more than 50 pounds full.

Bulk items

Garbage day

Furniture and appliances can go out on your garbage day. Large or multiple items go on your Claw Zone day; call Waste Pro at 386-492-8855.

Wednesday

Yard waste

Citywide. Bag or can small debris, and bundle branches in 4-foot lengths.

Glass

Tape it

Tape mirrors, shower doors, and sheet glass so they don’t shatter in the truck.

Holidays

Only three

Waste Pro takes only Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day off.

Not on the curb, not on our truck: Paint, batteries, pool and garden chemicals, pressurized cans, and cooking oil go to the Tomoka Landfill or the West Volusia Transfer Station. Remodeling debris is collected only when the resident did the work; licensed contractors haul their own.

Garages, hangars, and lanais

The parts of a Port Orange house that take the longest.

The living room is rarely the problem. Time goes into the garage shelves, the workshop, the lanai furniture, and, in Spruce Creek, the hangar. Planning those spaces first is how a long-time home gets moved in one day.

  • Garages, sheds, and hangars staged and loaded first
  • Tools, shelving, and workbench contents boxed and labeled
  • Patio and lanai furniture padded for the ride
  • China, glass, and art packed by hand
  • A room plan for the new home, so pieces land where they belong

Storm-season smart

Moving between June and November?

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. A little planning protects the move.

Before closing

Look up the new address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, and line up wind and flood coverage with start dates that overlap.

The week of the move

Watch the forecast, keep a backup date, and pack an essentials box with medication, documents, and chargers.

If dates slip

When a storm moves a closing, ask about storage solutions so the truck doesn’t have to wait.

A bit of history: In 1804 Patrick Dean received a Spanish land grant of 995 acres here, later the Dunlawton Plantation; its sugar mill was destroyed twice during the Second Seminole War, and the ruins still stand on Old Sugar Mill Road. After the Civil War, Dr. John Milton Hawks and other Union Army officers brought about 500 freed people to the Halifax River north of Spruce Creek in 1866. The settlement, first named Orange Port, became Port Orange in April 1867. Mount Moriah Baptist Church, built in 1911 on Orange Avenue, remains from that community, once known as Freemanville.
