Mount Dora, FL · Lake County

Mount Dora movers for downsizing moves, lake-town homes, and hillside streets.

Mount Dora sits on the shore of Lake Dora at 184 feet above sea level, which is high ground for Florida. One resident in three is 65 or older, and many moves here are a step down in size: a family house to a cottage, a condo, or a retirement community. Black Swan Moving plans each one around local details, starting with which of three electric companies serves the new address.

Power first

Three different electric companies serve Mount Dora addresses.

Most Florida cities have one electric provider. Mount Dora has three, and the right one depends on which side of US 441 and Lake Dora the house sits. Confirm it before you book the move, so the lights and the A/C are on when the crew arrives.

City-owned

City of Mount Dora Electric

The city runs its own electric utility, with more than 6,144 customers. Its territory generally runs east and north of Lake Dora, from the Orange County line up to US 441 and west to Eudora Road. The edges are irregular, and some areas south of US 441 between Donnelly Street and Eudora Road are not served.

Investor-owned

Duke Energy

Duke serves many Mount Dora-area addresses outside the city’s electric territory. The city also buys its wholesale power from Duke, which is why the names are easy to mix up. Start, stop, or move service on Duke’s own website.

Co-op

SECO Energy

SECO is the member-owned electric cooperative for parts of Lake County. The city’s rules say it does not serve any location east or north of US 441, so those addresses go to Duke Energy or SECO.

Not sure which one you have? Call Utility Customer Service at 352-735-7105 (510 N. Baker St., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and ask whether the address is in the city’s electric territory. The same office handles city water, sewer, and sanitation.
City utilities

One business day of notice, one email, and a deposit.

Mount Dora’s Utility Customer Service sets up electric (where the city provides it), water, sewer, irrigation, and sanitation on one account.

Downsizing

Moving into less space takes more planning, not more muscle.

With an average of 2.22 people per household and a third of residents over 65, a lot of Mount Dora moves are about fitting a lifetime of furniture into fewer rooms. The hard part is deciding, not lifting. We help with the parts that make the decisions stick:

  • Room sizes or a floor plan for the new home, so we know what fits before moving day
  • Packing only the rooms you choose, with fragile and sentimental pieces packed by our crew
  • Beds and large tables taken apart, then rebuilt and placed where you want them
  • Labels by room, so the boxes go to the right place on the first trip

Trash week

What Mount Dora’s Waste Management service means when you move.

Inside city limits, Waste Management (WM) collects under a city contract. Everything at a house goes out on the same day each week, and the day depends on your area of town.

If you haveWhat to do
Furniture or a mattress you are leavingIt can go out with your regular weekly garbage. No special appointment is needed.
A refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove, or TVCall WM at 1-866-684-3142 to schedule a special pickup. Refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed or taped shut first.
An old computer towerNot collected at the curb. The city treats CPUs as household hazardous waste, so take it to the Lake County Landfill.
Yard debris from cleaning up the old placeSeparate from the garbage, no more than 4 feet long and 6 inches across, bagged or bundled. A separate truck collects it.
A condo or apartment with cartsTwice-a-week service. The city’s list shows complexes on Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday.
All those moving boxes: since February 2021, everything set out at the curb goes to a waste-to-energy plant, so recycling and garbage can share the carts. If you want boxes recycled the traditional way, take them to the downtown recycling compactors or a Lake County drop-off site. Everything must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day.
Festival weekends

Downtown fills up twice a year, and a moving truck can’t get through.

Mount Dora’s two biggest festivals put booths and barricades on the streets of the historic downtown. If either home is downtown, pick another weekend.

Mount Dora Craft Fair

Held every fourth weekend of October on the streets of the historic walking district, with live music in Donnelly Park. The 2026 fair is October 24 and 25.

Mount Dora Arts Festival

The 52nd festival runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, with art displayed through the downtown streets.

Smaller events also close downtown streets during the year. Check the Chamber’s festival calendar before you pick a date, and we will check it too.

Where in Mount Dora?

Four kinds of Mount Dora moves.

Each one needs a different plan.

Historic downtown

Donnelly Street & the Lakeside Inn

What it’s like: Older homes on small lots, close to shops and restaurants, a few blocks from the lake. The Lakeside Inn opened here as the Alexander House in 1883.

How we plan: Runners and doorway pads for original floors, and a walk of the block to find where a box truck can stop.

Lakefront

Lake Dora & Lake Gertrude

What it’s like: Sloped lots running down to the water, with porches, docks, and outdoor furniture.

How we plan: Extra crew for long carries up the slope, and padding for patio sets and outdoor pieces.

Communities with rules

Retirement & 55+ communities

What it’s like: Gated entrances, clubhouses, and apartments or villas with move-in rules.

How we plan: We follow the community’s move times, gate lists, elevator bookings, and insurance-certificate requests.

Newer neighborhoods

Along US 441 and SR 46

What it’s like: Newer single-family homes, often with two-car garages, on the growing edges of town.

How we plan: A full-size truck in the driveway, and a crew sized for a full house and garage.

Packed and routed

What happens before the truck leaves the driveway.

Roads that shape the day

US 441

The main road south toward Apopka and Orlando, and north toward Tavares and Eustis. The city’s electric territory ends at US 441.

SR 46 & the Wekiva Parkway

SR 46 heads east; the SR 453 Mount Dora Connector links it to the Wekiva Parkway (SR 429), which now reaches I-4 near Sanford. Both are all-electronic toll roads, which we factor into routes toward Seminole County.

Old 441 & Donnelly Street

Slower roads through town, with downtown traffic on weekends and festival days.

Most of our Mount Dora moves are within Lake, Orange, and Seminole counties. See how our local moves work and what affects the price of a move.

Your first month

Five things to do once the boxes are unpacked.

  • Morning walk

    Palm Island Park

A boardwalk through the wetland along Lake Dora, three blocks from downtown.

  • Sunset

    The Mount Dora Lighthouse

A 35-foot lighthouse dedicated in 1988 at Grantham Point, which the Historical Society calls the only lighthouse on an inland lake in Florida.

  • Lunch guests

    The Lakeside Inn

Open since 1883 under three names. The city lists Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford among its guests.

  • Rainy day

    W.T. Bland Public Library

The city’s public library, at 1995 N. Donnelly St.

  • February

    The Arts Festival

Go as a visitor, not on moving day.

A bit of history: the settlement on Lake Dora was called Royellou, after the postmaster’s three children, until residents renamed it Mount Dora in 1883 for its hills. When Mount Dora was chartered in 1910, it had 371 residents, two general stores, a hardware store, a drugstore, two churches, and a town hall.

Quoted exactly as customers wrote them.

Moving is a stressful, time-consuming, nerve-racking ordeal, whether it is a cross town, or across the country. Black Swan Moving made my latest move easy, and one of my best experiences. We will definitely use again in the future. I requested an online quote and received a detailed email almost immediately. Bryant took my call, information and logistics when I scheduled the move was helpful, accommodating, and very courteous. I got a reminder call the day before our move, and a text message from the driver the day of the move, when they were on the way to my place and they arrived right on time. They loaded everything in our home, yard and outside storage quickly, efficiently, and safely; then unloaded it even faster. They were prepared with blankets, plastic wraps, cardboard, and handled everything with great attention and care. It could not have been better, it even came in under my estimate! Greatly appreciated Black Swan Moving.

FAQ

Mount Dora moving questions.

Who provides electricity at a Mount Dora address?

It depends on the address. The City of Mount Dora runs its own electric utility, which generally covers the area east and north of Lake Dora up to US 441, but the boundary is irregular, and the city does not serve anything east or north of US 441. Other Mount Dora addresses are served by Duke Energy or SECO Energy. Call the city's Utility Customer Service at 352-735-7105 to confirm before you set up power.

How do I start city utilities in Mount Dora?

Email the application, a photo ID, and either a signed lease or proof of ownership (such as a closing disclosure or warranty deed) to CustomerService@CityofMountDora.com. The city asks for one business day of notice. New accounts pay a $30 setup fee, or $5 if you sign up for both paperless billing and automatic bank draft.

How much are Mount Dora utility deposits?

Residential deposits are two times the average monthly bill for the address, with minimums of $240 for electric, $40 for water, $75 for sewer, $60 for irrigation or reclaimed water, and $40 for sanitation. A passing credit check may waive the deposit. Only the services the city actually provides at your address apply.

When is trash day in Mount Dora, and what about furniture?

Waste Management collects garbage, recycling, and yard debris on the same day each week, by area of the city, and condos and apartments with carts get twice-weekly service. Furniture, mattresses, and small electronics can go out with regular garbage. Appliances and televisions need a special pickup scheduled with Waste Management at 1-866-684-3142, and refrigerator or freezer doors must be removed or taped shut.

Should I avoid moving on a festival weekend?

If either address is downtown, yes. The Mount Dora Craft Fair (October 24-25, 2026) and the Mount Dora Arts Festival (February 6-7, 2027) fill the downtown streets with booths and barricades. We plan downtown moves for a different weekend, or for a weekday, whenever we can.

We are downsizing. Can you help us decide what fits?

Yes. Send us the floor plan or room sizes for the new home and a list of the pieces you want to keep. We can pack only the rooms you choose, take apart and rebuild beds, and place furniture where you want it on the first trip, so nothing has to be shuffled later.

Do you move people into retirement and 55+ communities in Mount Dora?

Yes. Many communities have their own move-in rules: reserved move times, elevator or loading-zone booking, and insurance certificates from the mover. Send us those rules with your quote request and we will plan around them.

Where is Black Swan Moving based?

We are based in Orange City in west Volusia County, and we move people to and from Mount Dora, Apopka, Sanford, Orlando, and the rest of Central Florida. Longer moves out of state are handled through our long-distance moving service.
