DeBary is bounded by the St. Johns River on the west, Lake Monroe on the south, Deltona and I-4 on the east, and Orange City on the north. It is named for Samuel Frederick de Bary, a New York wine importer who bought land on Lake Monroe in 1871 and built the hunting estate now called DeBary Hall. The city itself incorporated on December 31, 1993.

About 6.5 million gallons of water a day rise from its two springs. Swimming isn’t allowed for now, but there is a nature trail and a bike loop.

A bit of history: The St. Johns River, one of the few rivers in the country that flows north, was the highway that built DeBary. Frederick deBary first came by steamboat in 1870, bought land on Lake Monroe in 1871, and built a 20-room house with a fireplace in each room. His DeBary Merchants’ Line ran steamboats on the river, and wealthy visitors came for winters of hunting and fishing. DeBary Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1972, and the City of DeBary incorporated on December 31, 1993.
