Maitland, FL · Orange County

Maitland movers who plan around the city’s four-day week.

Maitland is a small city with a lot of rules worth knowing: utilities handled Monday through Thursday, trash days that change from one end of a street to the other, boat passes for the lakes, and a historic corridor of homes from the 1880s. Black Swan Moving builds your moving day around those details, so the only thing left for Saturday is the move itself.

Maitland in one minute

A lake town of 5.36 square miles where people move often.

Maitland sits between Winter Park and Altamonte Springs, with I-4 on its west side and US 17-92 (Orlando Avenue) through the middle. It is one of the oldest incorporated towns in Central Florida: Fort Maitland went up on the west shore of Lake Maitland in 1838, and the Town of Lake Maitland incorporated in 1885. A 1959 charter shortened the name.

Fewer than half of Maitland’s homes are owner-occupied, so apartment and condo moves are a big share of the work, and about one resident in five lived somewhere else a year earlier. Many of those moves are short: a downtown apartment to a house on a lake, a family home to a condo, or a hop into Winter Park.

  • 19,511residents (Census estimate, July 1, 2025)
  • 5.36 mi²of land inside city limits
  • 44.4%of homes owner-occupied (2020–2024)
  • 77.2%of residents in the same house as a year earlier
  • 21lakes, canals, and waterways managed by the city
  • 1885incorporated as the Town of Lake Maitland

A Saturday move, day by day

Plan the paperwork around a four-day City Hall.

City Hall and Customer Services are open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and closed Fridays. Here is how a Saturday move lines up with that week.

Monday

City Hall open

Call Customer Services at 407-539-6265 or email utilities@itsmymaitland.com for the Residential Utility Service Request Form, plus the Termination of Service Request if you are leaving a Maitland address.

Tuesday

City Hall open

Find your street on the city’s pick-up list and note your recycling day. That is also your bulk day, so request a pickup for furniture you are leaving.

Wednesday

City Hall open

Yard waste goes out citywide on Wednesdays, a good day to clear the patio. Confirm your Duke Energy start date.

Thursday

Last day this week

Last City Hall day of the week. Pay the listed deposits ($45 water, $110 sewer, $30 solid waste) and have the city schedule the water turn-on or turn-off.

Friday

City Hall closed

Finish packing. Tuesday/Friday streets have garbage today. For a water emergency after hours, call the city at 407-539-6262.

Saturday

Moving day

Our crew arrives with runners, pads, and dollies. The paperwork is done, so the whole day goes to careful loading.

Moving on a weekday? Same idea: get the forms in a business day ahead, and remember Friday is not a business day at City Hall. There is no trash collection on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.
Read your trash schedule

What your street’s line on the pick-up list means for moving week.

Maitland lists garbage and recycling days street by street, about 260 lines in all. Most streets get garbage Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday, with recycling on one of those days.

If the list saysWhat it means when you move
Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/FridayYour garbage days. Carts go out no earlier than 5 p.m. the night before, at the curb by 7 a.m. with handles and wheels facing the house, and back in by 7 p.m. Keep them 3 feet from mailboxes, parked cars, and the moving truck.
Recycle dayAlso your bulk day. Schedule it in advance for sofas, tables, mattresses, refrigerators, or televisions.
East / West, North / South, or a house-number rangeSome streets are split. George Street East is Monday/Thursday, George Street West is Tuesday/Friday, and the two halves of Lake Sybelia Drive recycle on different days. Check your house number.
Dumpsters – No City Service (condos)Several condo streets use the association’s dumpsters, not city carts. Ask the manager where boxes go, and call 407-539-6265 about bulk items.
Do Not ServiceAt least one listed street belongs to Winter Park. If yours is missing or marked this way, another provider handles your trash.
All those boxes: flatten them for the blue 64-gallon recycling cart, and tie extra cardboard in bundles no larger than 3 by 3 feet. Styrofoam and plastic film bags aren’t accepted. For paint and other hazardous items we can’t load, the city’s FAQ points to Seminole County’s household hazardous waste program.

Historic corridor homes

Older houses near Lake Lily and Lake Catherine get extra floor protection.

Maitland keeps a historic corridor of lived-in homes through the Lake Lily and Lake Catherine area. The city’s history lists houses such as:

  • Robert L. Wagner House, 1881
  • Arthur O’Heir House, 1885
  • James Arch House, 1885
  • Chadburne Hall (High Oaks), 1890
  • Hill-Stone House, 1908

Older homes often mean original wood floors, narrow doorways, porch steps, and heirloom furniture. We wrap pieces in blankets and then shrink-wrap, and we carry rather than roll on finished floors. Not sure a doorway will take the sofa? Send measurements or a photo with your quote request.

  • Runners from the front step through every room we use
  • Door-jamb and banister pads before the first carry
  • Beds and large tables taken apart and rebuilt at the new home
Moving to the water

Lakefront homes come with a few rules of their own.

The city manages 21 lakes, canals, and waterways, from Lake Maitland and Lake Sybelia to Lake Lily downtown. Moving onto one? Know these three rules.

Boats

A pass for motorized boats

Motorized boats on any Maitland lake need a city boat pass; non-motorized boats are free. Annual passes are sold in person at Maitland Community Park, 1400 Mayo Ave.; bring your license and boat registration. The only municipal ramp is at Fort Maitland Park, 900 S. Orlando Ave.

Shorelines

Permits before you change the edge

Removing aquatic plants or changing a shoreline needs city permit approval first, and docks have a separate waterfront structure permit. Check before hiring a cleanup crew.

Lawns

No summer fertilizer

From June 1 through September 30, Maitland bans lawn fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus. Unlike Orange County’s rule, there is no exception for certified applicators.

Lake lots mean long carries, sloped yards, and sheds full of kayaks and patio sets. List them in your quote request so we bring enough pads and crew.

Where in Maitland?

Four places your Maitland move might start or end.

Each one needs a different plan.

Downtown & SunRail

Orlando Avenue near the station

What it’s like: The SunRail station at 801 N. Orlando Ave., just south of the Maitland Boulevard overpass, is a short walk from the municipal complex and Lake Lily Park, with apartments like the Parker at Maitland Station steps away.

How we plan: We confirm the loading area, elevator reservation, and leasing office rules ahead of time.

Historic center

Lake Lily & Lake Catherine

What it’s like: Older homes and mature trees. The Park House hotel between Park Lake and Lake Catherine once hosted Presidents Grover Cleveland and Chester Arthur.

How we plan: Runners, padded doorways, and a check for low branches before the truck backs in.

Lakefront

Lake Maitland & Lake Sybelia

What it’s like: Larger lots, docks, and boat gear, plus subdivisions such as Dommerich, Winfield, and Maitland Woods nearby.

How we plan: Extra crew for long carries and outdoor gear, and the truck in the driveway when it fits.

Business park west of I-4

Maitland Center

What it’s like: A 226-acre office park inside city limits, developed in the late 1970s.

How we plan: Building management sets the rules: insurance certificates, freight elevators, and after-hours windows. See commercial moving.

Roads that shape the day

US 17-92 (Orlando Avenue)

The main north–south road, past the SunRail station, Fort Maitland Park, and the Enzian, toward Winter Park and Casselberry.

Maitland Boulevard (SR 414)

Crosses US 17-92 just north of the station and meets I-4 at exit 90, the usual way onto the interstate toward Altamonte Springs and Longwood.

Interstate 4

Separates Maitland Center from the rest of the city. Longer moves start early to beat rush hour.

Most Maitland moves are local, so loading and unloading take more of the time than the drive. Here is how our local moves work and what affects the price of a move.

Your first month

What to do once the boxes are unpacked.

  • Sunday morning

    Maitland Farmer’s Market

Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Lily Park: produce, flowers, crafts, food, and live music.

  • An evening walk

    Lake Lily Park

Ten acres with a half-mile trail, a boardwalk, a playground, and the Waterhouse Residence Museum.

  • A rainy afternoon

    Art & History Museums Maitland

Four museums on West Packwood Avenue, including the Maitland Art Center, greater Orlando’s only National Historic Landmark, and the Telephone Museum.

  • With the kids

Audubon Center for Birds of Prey

Rescuing Florida raptors since 1979, on Lake Sybelia. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Date night

    Enzian

A single-screen cinema café on South Orlando Avenue, home of the Eden Bar and the Florida Film Festival.

A bit of history: Fort Maitland was named for Captain William Seton Maitland, a Seminole Wars officer who never saw the place. After the railroad arrived in 1880, Maitland shipped as many as 300,000 boxes of citrus a season, and the Florida Audubon Society held its first meeting here in March 1900.

Quoted exactly as customers wrote them.

As a Realtor I know there are a lot of option out there when it comes to movers, I chose Black Swan for my person move and could not have been more pleased. Customer service was great over the phone. I will say you may call and not get an answer but leave a message and they will call you back asap. The guys who came to assist with ny move were Bryant and Jerry. They let ne know when they were on their way and arrived within the time promosed tk start. When they arrived they introduced themselve, both were very friendly as well as efficient and quick. Bryant wrapped and banded blankets around anything unboxed in record time. It was obvious it was not his first rodeo.. lol I say rodeo because it reminded me of the hog tying competitions. Everything arrived at the new house safe and sound and Bryant reassembled my furniture better than it was before from orginal store delivery people. Took the time to do it right. I was orginally in a 4th floor apt so there was a lot of effort to move it from the apt so the fact there was nothing damaged was impressive but had there been they do provide some insurance with an option to add additional should you feel a need to. I will be recommending them to clients in the future with confidence. They literally roll out the red carpet for you! Be sure to tip these guys they work hard!

Life brings many trials and tribulations~ with the transitioning of my husband after a battle with cancer, I moved from a 5BDR home to a condo. Black Swan Moving (Bryant) was extremely professional, punctual, and extremely responsive during an extremely stressful time. From multiple sites to locate pieces of furniture that would fit in a new condo to rearranging items in 2 AC storage units, I cannot express how extremely helpful the entire team was with my move!!! We have moved multiple times— very large moves with large furniture and this was by far the best! Words cannot express my gratitude and appreciation!!!

Absolutely amazing! When I tell you Bryant and his team are phenomenal I mean it. Incredible rates for extremely innovative and professional service! As someone who has moved several times over the last few years I’ve dealt with my share of good and bad moving companies. Black Swan is easily my new #1 moving company in Central Florida! They are innovative and efficient when it comes to their moving techniques and extremely friendly and personable which just adds to the experience. You can tell they take pride in their work and will be sure to take care of your belongings throughout your move. They quite literally rolled out a red carpet and took care of business. I am proud to support this business and will keep them in mind for any future moves! 10/10 would recommend.

FAQ

Maitland moving questions.

Is a 32751 address always inside Maitland city limits?

No. ZIP 32751 is shared with the Town of Eatonville, and the city's own pickup list includes at least one street it does not serve. The City of Maitland provides solid waste service only inside city limits,, so look up your parcel on the Orange County Property Appraiser site before you set up services.

How do I start or stop water, sewer, and trash service in Maitland?

Call Customer Services at 407-539-6265 or email utilities@itsmymaitland.com and ask for the Residential Utility Service Request Form (to start) or the Termination of Service Request (to stop). The listed deposits are $45 for water, $110 for sewer, and $30 for solid waste. Customer Services is at City Hall, 1776 Independence Lane, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The water meter belongs to the city, so do not shut it off yourself; ask Customer Services to send a technician.

Can I handle Maitland utilities on a Friday or Saturday?

Not in person. City Hall and Customer Services keep Monday-through-Thursday hours, so finish the forms, deposits, and bulk-pickup request by Thursday. For a water or sewer emergency after hours, the city's dispatch number is 407-539-6262.

Who provides electricity in Maitland?

Duke Energy serves the Maitland area and has a multiyear grid project under way there. Start service before moving day so the A/C is on when the crew arrives. Duke's customer care number is 800-700-8744. The city's 2025-26 fee schedule lists a 6% franchise fee and a 10% utility tax on electric service.

How do I get rid of furniture I'm not taking?

For single-family homes, bulk items are picked up on your recycling day. Schedule it ahead of that day by emailing utilities@itsmymaitland.com or calling 407-539-6265. Accepted examples include sofas, tables, mattresses, refrigerators, and televisions. Condos and other multi-family buildings should call the same number. The city says other electronics can go to the Seminole County Transfer Station.

What should I do with all the moving boxes?

Flatten them for the blue 64-gallon recycling cart, and tie extra cardboard in bundles no larger than 3 by 3 feet. Styrofoam and plastic film bags are not accepted. Carts go to the curb by 7 a.m., at least 3 feet from mailboxes, parked cars, and other cans.

We're moving to a lake home with a boat. What do we need?

A City of Maitland boat pass is required to run a motorized boat on any lake in the city; non-motorized boats are free. Buy the annual pass in person at Maitland Community Park, 1400 Mayo Ave., with your driver license and boat registration. The city's only municipal ramp is at Fort Maitland Park, where trailer parking is free on weekdays and $25 a day on weekends.

Do you move apartments near the SunRail station and offices in Maitland Center?

Yes. Apartment moves near the SunRail station and downtown depend on elevators, loading areas, and leasing office rules. Office moves in Maitland Center, west of I-4, follow building management rules and after-hours windows. Send us those rules with your quote request.
