A small, fast-growing city with old roots.
Orange City sits in West Volusia between DeLand and DeBary, with US 17-92 through the middle and I-4 along its eastern edge. Founders bought about 5,000 acres here in 1875, and the city incorporated on August 26, 1882, named for the orange groves that the Big Freeze wiped out twelve years later. The 1928 Town Hall on Graves Avenue, built in the style of a New England town hall, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city grew about 20% from 2020 to 2025, with new apartments and subdivisions alongside older streets. About a quarter of residents are 65 or older, so we see every kind of move here: first apartments, growing families, and downsizing from the family home to a condo.

Garbage · bulk · yard wasteEverything at the curb by 7 a.m., within 5 feet of the road. Bulk items are limited to 4 cubic yards a week, and each piece must be light enough for two people to lift. Empty large boxes count as bulk.
Tuesday
RecyclingOne recycling cart per home. Clean and dry cans, jars, bottles, paper, and cardboard. No plastic bags, Styrofoam, or extra items outside the cart.
Wednesday, 3 p.m.

Appliance pickupScheduled appliances are collected. A good day to clear the garage before the weekend.

Pack the last boxesNo collection. Take paint, pool chemicals, and batteries to Volusia County’s hazardous waste drop-off; they can’t go in the truck or the cart.

Moving dayYour crew arrives. Leave the carts out of the driveway so the truck can back in.

Check your address with Duke and start service a few days before the move, so the lights and the A/C are on when the crew arrives with your furniture.
Trash & recycling
There is no separate trash bill. The Waste Pro fee is a city assessment on the annual property tax bill, and every home gets one trash cart and one recycling cart.
Plan around the manatees.
Blue Spring State Park, at 2100 W. French Ave., is Orange City’s best-known neighbor. It also changes the traffic on the west side of town.
Manatee season
The spring run is closed to swimming, and the manatees take over. Researchers tracked 14 manatees in 1970; the winter count hit a record 729 in 2023. Winter weekends get busy on West French Avenue.
Swimming season
The 72-degree spring run opens to swimming, tubing, and paddling. Summer weekends bring their own crowds and a full parking lot.
Capacity closures

After the move
Open every day of the year; $6 per vehicle. Walk along the spring run or the 4.5-mile Pine Island Trail, and visit the 1872 Thursby House.

What it’s like: Older homes near the 1928 Town Hall and the 1876 Heritage Inn, on narrow, tree-lined streets off US 17-92.

Toward Blue Spring
What it’s like: Neighborhoods along West French Avenue and toward the St. Johns River and Blue Spring State Park.

What it’s like: Apartments, newer subdivisions, shopping, and AdventHealth Fish Memorial at 1055 Saxon Blvd., close to I-4 exits 111A and 111B.

Just outside city limits
What it’s like: Some homes with an Orange City address are in unincorporated Volusia County, with county trash service and sometimes different utilities.

The main road through town, north to DeLand and south to DeBary and Sanford.
I-4
Exits 111A and 111B at Saxon Boulevard and exit 114 at SR 472 serve Orange City. The quickest way to Lake Mary, Orlando, and Daytona Beach.
Saxon Boulevard & French Avenue
Saxon is the busy east side, with shops and the hospital. French Avenue leads west to Blue Spring.

A bit of history: The first permanent home in this part of Volusia County was the Thursby house on Blue Spring Run, built in the 1850s (the house standing there today dates from 1872). Orange City’s water won a silver medal at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition, and John D. Rockefeller, Sr. reportedly had Orange City mineral spring water sent to him wherever he traveled.

Inside city limits, Waste Pro collects garbage, bulk items, and yard waste on Monday and recycling on Tuesday. Everything must be at the curb, within 5 feet of the road, by 7 a.m. If your days are different, you are probably served by Volusia County instead.
